n Flat Broke in Paradise, Nick Thomas grew up in San Francisco's Pacific Heights, an affluent and prestigious neighborhood. The area receives less fog than much of San Francisco so the residents can enjoy spectacular views of the San Francisco Bay and Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. Due to its affluence, Pacific Heights has a good number of private schools and academies as well as high-end boutiques.
The neighborhood was established int he 1870's, but most of the current neighborhood was built after the 1906 earthquake and resulting fire.
Pacific Heights is the home of many foreign consulates, including those of Italy, Greece, Germany, Portugal, Russia, South Korea, and Vietnam.
In 2013, Pacific Heights was the most expensive residential neighborhood in the United States, the median price of a single family home costing $10,250,000. If you have the means, head over to the Pacific Heights Residents Association and learn more.
